Construction to start on two skate park upgrades in April

Skaters, BMX riders and scooter riders will enjoy two improved facilities later this year, with construction on a major skate park upgrade at Alexandra Headland and minor works at Coolum due to start in late April.

Construction is timed to make the most of beneficial weather and avoid the summer holiday period.

Division 4 Councillor John Connolly said preparations were now underway for construction.

“The final design for Alex offers a modern and innovative skate park that includes many features the community asked for,” Cr Connolly said.

“We understand there will be some inconvenience for users during construction, so we are aiming to give plenty of notice before work starts and we’re confident the end result will make the wait worthwhile.

“Skaters, BMXers and scooter riders are encouraged to try out one of the Coast’s many other skate parks while work is underway.”

Division 9 Councillor Steve Robinson said the Coolum upgrades would include minor improvements ahead of further work in 2018.

“New retaining walls and improved rails are the first stage of upgrades at Coolum Skate Park,” Cr Robinson said.

“Both projects are funded through council’s Capital Works Program, which delivers a range of recreational projects for our community.

“The Coolum Skate Park will be subject to restricted access over a 10-week period and we would like to thank the park users for their patience while these upgrades are underway.”

A full list of skate parks and their facilities are listed on council’s website in the Beaches and Parks Directory. These include parks at Nambour, Bli Bli, Caloundra, Eumundi, Sippy Downs, Dicky Beach, Eudlo, Yandina, Mapleton, Landsborough, Little Mountain, Kuluin, Kawana, Kenilworth, Mooloolah, Mudjimba, Pacific Paradise and Palmwoods.

Alexandra Headland upgrade

• Major upgrades will include elements to suit skaters, BMX riders and scooter riders of all ability levels – with a split level advanced bowl, mini bowl and stair set among the key design features.
• Other park improvements include a stage area, lighting and pathways.
• The final concept design was developed by Sunshine Coast Council and specialist skate park designers following two rounds of community consultation in 2016.
• Construction is expected to be completed in November.
