Foreshore design presents a great opportunity for Mooloolaba
Mooloolaba’s natural beauty and relaxed lifestyle have been reflected in the detailed design for the Mooloolaba foreshore released by Sunshine Coast Council.
The detailed design has been released ahead of the first stage of works starting in May 2020, which will focus on the northern end of the foreshore.
The design seeks to increase the public beachfront parkland by 40 per cent, add extensive waterfront pathways, and provide enhanced spaces and amenities, including the addition of a water play area, central events green and beach acces ramp, over several years as funding becomes available.
Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson said the Mooloolaba Foreshore Revitalisation project would benefit locals, businesses and tourists alike.
“This is one of many Mooloolaba projects council is investing in to create a world-class beachside destination,” Mayor Jamieson said.
“Building on the work undertaken as part of the Mooloolaba Place Making Master Plan, the detailed design seeks to realise the vision that emerged from that process and which had been the product of an extensive community consultation process.
“This project is planned to be delivered in multiple stages over coming years, with the $2 million first stage beginning at the northern end of the foreshore to be constructed from May 2020 until late 2020."
Stage 1 beginning May 2020:
“The first stage supports our healthy, smart, creative lifestyle, with an important new coastal link boardwalk to Alexandra Headland, which is sure to please walkers, runners and sightseers.
“A viewing platform with seating will be constructed to allow users to experience the incredible sights, along with a dedicated open space for the community to come together and connect with nature.”
The Placemaking Mooloolaba Master Plan was formally adopted by council in December 2015, following an extensive community engagement process.
Division 4 Councillor John Connolly said he was excited the evolved design and long-term vision of the project included a new and improved Loo with a View, kiosk, outdoor gym, modern playgrounds, including a water play area, updated amenities and barbecue areas.

“Throughout the consultation process on the Master Plan, the community told council it was time for this incredible, much-loved location to be upgraded so it can be better utilised,” Cr Connolly said.
“We received thousands of responses about the future Mooloolaba, which included suggestions for more exciting parks, better pedestrian access and improved infrastructure for events along the foreshore.
“Council has taken these wonderful ideas and created a detailed design which will rejuvenate and enrich our foreshore over the years to come.”
Place Development and Design Portfolio Councillor Peter Cox said the foreshore revitalisation design was inspired by the forms and patterns of the area’s stunning natural assets.
“The existing character of Mooloolaba underpins the design and these upgrades will aim to strike a balance that will enhance users’ experience and provide opportunities to interact with the natural setting,” Cr Cox said.
“Once complete, this revitalisation will breathe new life into the foreshore, providing fresh opportunities for those special moments in life – from family barbecues on the lawn to hosting weddings, markets, festivals and events.”

Mooloolaba Foreshore Revitalisation design inspiration:
• The smooth flowing forms of the crescent-shaped beach and winding headline which are reflected in the flowing forms of the foreshore parkland.
• The foaming waves and watermark on the beach influence form and patterning of the pavements.
• The signature Sunshine Coast foreshore species of Casuarina, Banksia and Pandanus provide striking leaf forms, shadows, fruit, flowers and nuts that influence the design and detailing of elements such as custom playgrounds, water play areas and art.
This project is one of many Mooloolaba infrastructure projects which council, the State and Federal Governments are investing in to create a world-class destination for residents and visitors to enjoy, including:
• the $3.5 million Mooloolaba Beach Holiday Park redevelopment
• the $2 million Mooloolaba boardwalk replacement
• the $18 million Brisbane Road car park redevelopment
• the $5.15 million Mayes Canal pedestrian and cycling bridge co-funded by council and the Queensland Government
• the $12 million Mayes Canal to Venning St corridor upgrade contribution from the Federal Government, and
• the Mooloolaba Transport Corridor upgrade.
