The outcome of Sunshine Coast Council's workshop to discuss parking issues

Sunshine Coast Council has committed to further investigations on the verge parking issue after an “open and candid discussion” at today’s workshop attended by a cross-section of the local community. 

Mayor Mark Jamieson said today’s forum provided an opportunity for all perspectives on parking on the verge to be canvassed and the attendees now had a better insight into the issues around verge parking.

“We’ve had a very good representation of opinion from all sectors of the community,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“In local government, there is often more than one side of the story for many of the issues which impact on our residents.

“And invariably there are more than two sides to the debate – as we have seen on this and many other matters.

“What is clear from today’s discussions is that the verge is an important access point for a range of stakeholders – utility providers, emergency services, builders and tradespeople, local residents and their visitors and many others.

“We acknowledge there are many differing perspectives on this issue and we have heard and discussed those today.”

Mayor Jamieson thanked today’s attendees for their contributions to the workshop which will now be reviewed and investigated to help inform council’s approach to managing verge parking in the future.

“Our council is open to hearing alternative approaches to managing the implementation of the State Government’s verge parking law,” he said.

“This is not an issue unique to the Sunshine Coast. It is one faced by growing regions across the state.

 “We’ll go away from today with a lot of food for thought about how things might be improved and education is top of the list.

 “With the help of candid and open discussions as we have participated in today, we can work towards an outcome that is in the best interests of the Sunshine Coast community.”
